Guide to Petrovka Street
The main route along Petrovka is connected with its name. Since ancient times, there was a road from the Kremlin to the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery, founded in the village of Vysokoe back in the 14th century by Dmitry Donskoy. From the Theater Square, past the Bolshoi and Maly Theaters, looking into the Central Department Store to get acquainted with perfume novelties, walk along the street, which in the 19th century was nicknamed «Moscow Paris». The names of many famous people are associated with Petrovka. The house at Petrovka 26 is directly connected with the famous Peltzer theater dynasty. The famous Lenkom star Tatyana Ivanovna Peltzer could often be found on Petrovka on the way to the theater.
In house 19, on the third floor, in 1903-1904, A.P. Chekhov rented an apartment.
And in house 18, even before the revolution, singer Alexander Vertinsky performed at the Petrovsky Miniature Theater.
The Kovalevsky family of scientists lived in house 20 - Sofya Vasilyevna, a mathematician and Vladimir Onufrievich, a paleontologist and geologist.
Lieutenant Annenkov lived in one of the houses lost during the reconstruction of Petrovka, whose romantic love story for Frenchwoman Polina Goble is the basis for the film «The Star of Captivating Happiness» by Vladimir Motyl and the novel «Fencing Teacher» by A. Dumas.
